Oil spill in T&T has no effect on marine life

Ships and boats to be cleaned
There are no signs of dead marine life off of Invaders Bay in Trinidad and Tobago where the oil spill occurred.
That’s according Managing Director of the Environmental Authority Dr. Joth Singh.
Dr. Singh has given the assurance today in a radio interview that the oil spill is causing no major damage to the environment.
However Dr. Singh said the spill is posing some problems for vessels in the area.
He added it’s affecting ships and boats which must be cleaned before they allowed out of the area which is being contained.
He noted they are trying to accelerate clean up efforts to deal with, outgoing vessels.
He further explained that once you get oil into an environment they will be some impact .in some way.
Singh said where the spillage took place, because, it’s not close to the ecosystems and fishery there are no reports of any negative impact.
The Leak from PowerGen bunker tanker took place two days ago which left a two mile oil slick affecting boats at the harbour in Port of Spain.
The spill amounts to some two hundred barrels which is equivalent to four thousand gallons in the sea.
Mr. Singh said to date fifty percent of the oil spillage was cleaned but they expect clean up efforts to also take place on Monday December 19th, 2011.
He said it’s heavy oil that could be vacuumed out of the water.
He said the Authority has managed to contain the spill.
